Prof. Sunghun Jung

Sunghun Jung received the bachelor’s degree in the Department of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2009. He received the M.S. degree and the Ph.D. degree in the Department of Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette in 2010 and 2013, respectively. From 2014 to 2016, he was a senior researcher at Samsung SDI Battery R&D center. From 2016 to 2018, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Drone System at Chodang University. He has been an assistant professor in the Department of Electric Vehicle Engineering at Dongshin University since 2018. His current research interests include energy efficient path planning, battery state estimation, and unmanned system algorithm and SW development.

Our research interests include control and optimization for autonomous operations of unmanned assets, particularly UAV, including; 

  • Energy efficient path planning using system control and optimization methods 

  • SOC, SOH, and SOP state estimation algorithm development of small Li-Ion battery pack system for miniature UAV 

  • Configurable model based SW platform development for miniature UAV

Current Research 1

Real-Time Web Map Service Based on a Solar Powered Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

  • Using the solar-powered, long-endurance, and hoverable UAV, daytime map images are continuously and repeatedly uploaded to the web map server

  • Uploaded map images are overlapped with the existing ground surface map images in real-time

Current Research 2

Developing the Marine Environment Monitoring Unmanned Aerial System for the Reduction of Fish Farm Damage

  • Marine environment observation UAV is being developed to instantly capture various marine phenomena occurring on the coast by carrying two sets of multi-Spectral imaging cameras

  • The remote reflectance of seawater is the most basic optical property to estimate color components in seawater and we could remotely estimate the chlorophyll concentration, and etc.

  • Total Production Quantity : 200 units

  • The rise of eco-friendly personal electric mobility is a worldwide trend and the first Korean-made IT convergence electric skateboard, Youth Board, is developed to lead the trend. Youth Board is remotely controllable using either Youth Wearable Controller or Youth App through Bluetooth v4.0 communication, can speed up to 25 km/hr, and operating time is approximately 1.5 hr. A LED display located in the front side of Youth Board deck shows three different states to a rider for user convenience: remaining battery SOC, current driving speed, and braking amount. Indoor EMC test results between Youth Board and Youth Wearable Controller and outdoor Youth Board driving test results are analyzed. In particular, driving test results show the maximum current output is about 15% lowered compared to the other competitor electric skateboard and it lessens the power burden of the motor ESC. These results show Youth Board’s usefulness as a personal mobility in the sense of small, light, and inexpensive aspects. Further detailed information can be found in the following link.
